Mark Heitzman, the artist, was born of Mark Heitzman, the cardiologist. “My life as a cardiologist seems at times to be one long futile fight against death,” says Heitzman. “Any victory is ultimately erased by time and circumstance.” The rusting and forgotten objects that attract him as an artist are also dying. Using graphite pencils and a kneaded rubber eraser, Heitzman brings new life to humanity’s flotsam and jetsam. “Somehow,” he says, “I feel I can give them a new and permanent existence on paper. This is a fight I can win.”
