Upon graduation from the Lyme Academy College of Fine Art, Woodstock artist Robert O. Murphy returned to Vermont and worked within the constructs of figurative traditions. Several years on this path, the artist says, led to a period of creative disquiet and experimentation. He now creates art with less emphasis on specific emotional cues. His intention, rather, is to construct work that fashions a "newly defined, neutral and unique space, one that is created by the tension between the object and the viewer's perceptions and experiential preconceptions," thus allowing for "meaningful pathways of interpretation and experience."
