Painting Landscapes in Pastel with Jim Markle
This in depth plein air workshop will include two painting sessions per day, and ongoing individual critiques by the instructor as you work. It will culminate with a group critique session on the final day discussing the artwork in progress and the experience of painting in plein air. Besides demonstrations by the instructor, various ways to approach pastel painting will be covered during the four days. You will be shown ways to start your paintings with under painting techniques. Besides much practical information, composition, value studies, three value design and principals of making subjects in your painting recede into space are just a few of the many things that will be covered. Each participant receives printed informational handouts written and designed by Markle about the various subjects covered during the workshop. There will be a question and answer period each day. Though structured for students with some art experience, artists at any stage of their development are welcome. Artists in any medium are welcome, but Markle’s focus for this workshop will be on painting landscapes with pastels. All participants should expect to start at least four to seven paintings during the workshop. Weather permitting, we will be painting in plein air most every day. Minimum 10/Maximum 16 students.
