Still Life Oil Painting with Elizabeth TorakThe goal of this workshop is to make still life come alive. We will start with a discussion of the palette and a demonstration of how to begin a painting. Critiques will cover the representation of form through light, shade, and atmosphere as well as value control, the use of color, and aspects of drawing. Traditional methods and techniques will be demonstrated; there will also be discussion of the abstract elements within a realistic painting. All levels, from beginner to advanced, are welcome. Several still lifes will be available to paint; those who want to bring their favorite things to paint are welcome to do so. Students are encouraged to work at their own pace. The instructor will work alongside the students demonstrating when necessary. Minimum 6/Maximum 12 students.  Download a materials list HERE.

Elizabeth Torak started oil painting at the age of 13 and has been painting professionally since she was 27. She was raised in Princeton, New Jersey, graduated from The Brearley School in Manhattan, and earned her undergraduate degree from The University of Chicago. After college she attended the Art Students League where she studied with legendary instructor Frank Mason. Her technique is the result of 35 years of training, practice, and experimentation. Elizabeth Torak has exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the country including the San Diego Art Institute and the Butler Museum of American Art; she has received over 40 awards and is listed in Who’s Who in America and the Biographical Encyclopedia of American Painters, Sculptors & Engravers of the US: Colonial to 2002. She has been the subject of many articles including a feature in American Artist Magazine. Her work and techniques are profiled in the book “Creative Oil Painting, Techniques from 15 Master Painters” by M. Stephen Doherty. Elizabeth lives in Pawlet, Vermont with her husband and fellow painter Thomas Torak. She is represented by Tilting at Windmills Gallery in Manchester, Vermont.  www.elizabethtorak.com
