GALLERY VI
“I was inspired to work with organic materials after seeing a collection of lacquered and finely carved gourd pottery from Olina, Mexico. I began researching the spiritual implications behind tribal art, while spending many years honing my technical skills with professional artists in Montreal and London, England.”
In 2004, Serena Kovalosky returned to her native homeland in the foothills of New York’s Adirondack Mountains and now creates contemporary gourdwork that walks the boundary between traditional craft and fine sculpture, reflecting the organic forms, natural textures and earthy tones of the woodlands of the Northeast. Kovalosky has been commissioned to create installations for ‘Agriculture to Art’ at The Egg Performing Arts Center, Albany, NY; ‘Wellness in the Park Festival’, Greenwich, NY, and McGill Bookstore, Montreal, Quebec, to name a few. She has received numerous grants, awards and corporate sponsorships, has had solo exhibitions in New York and Montreal, and participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Vermont, New York and Montreal.
