John MacDonald's love of realism is directly tied to his love of the craft of painting. To build a solidly believable space of form, light, and atmosphere from the fluid dabs of oil paints is to him a challenge and a joy. "I'm much more interested in manipulating the formal elements of painting than I am in creating any narrative content", says MacDonald. This explains why he often omits architectural elements and always omits figures from his work. The inclusion of buildings and people, he explains, restrict a painting to a specific time and place.
