Leah Woods - For Rose Bertin
Anigre, Maple, Brass, 32" x 60" x 48", $6,400. For Rose Bertin is a cabinet inspired by the dressmaker for Marie Antoinette. Ms. Bertin was an advocate of a "larger than life" style in everything that Marie Antoinette wore from her dresses to her hairstyles to her hats and attitude. I was envisioning, with this cabinet, if Rose Bertin had designed furniture how she might have applied her philosophy. |

Out of the Woods: Works by Northern New England Furniture Makers is an
exhibition of furniture made by furniture makers living and working in
Northern New England. This exhibition features a selection of high quality
works that range from traditional forms to highly conceptual works. All are
functional and are characterized by the fine craftsmanship and attention to
detail that distinguish the work of fine furniture makers. The exhibition
is scheduled for May 8 through June 15 and will be featured in the Southern
Vermont Art Center's Yester House.
Work by furniture makers from Vermont, Maine, New Hampshire and Western
Massachusetts are featured. This representative sample brings together
artisans who go beyond reproducing traditional furniture forms with
traditional materials and bring something of their own artistic sense to the
work. Overall, quality craftsmanship, strong aesthetics and originality are
the criteria for this exhibition. This can be something as subtle as the
introduction or inclusion of unusual materials or proportions, or as wild as
a completely conceptual form. This year's exhibitors include: Tim Coleman, Shelburne, MA; Doug Clarner, East Burke, VT; Gerald Curry, Union, ME;
Garrett Hack, Thetford Center, VT; David Heinz, Springfield, VT; Steve Holman, Dorset, VT;
David Hurwitz, Randolph, VT (in collaboration with Kerry Furlani, Rutland, VT); William Laberge, Dorset, VT;
Dan Mosheim, Dorset, VT; J. Peter Schlebecker, Camden, ME and Leah Woods, Portsmouth, NH
