M. Elizabeth H. Holland graduated from Maryland’s Towson State
College, now Towson University, in 1972, with a BS in Art Education.
Wedged between college and today are a few years in New Orleans,
four children, a two-decade stint in Philadelphia and fourteen years
in the Holland family’s adopted state of Vermont. It is here,
Holland says, that her art has flourished through friendships with
other painters and through courses taken with frequent Arts Center
exhibitor and instructor, Thomas Torak. The Minimalist and abstract
approach to painting that she favored in college has proved to be
a backdoor entrance into the structure of realistic painting. Learning
of, and starting to understand, composition, color, drawing, light
and design – just to name a few – has become her life’s
pursuit. "Painting from life," says Holland, "in
both watercolor and oil, is for me a source of much hard work, and
pleasure." |
