In 2002, Janice Hunt moved from New York City to northern Vermont and rekindled and combined, through her art, her earliest interests, art and animals. Drawing and painting farm animals deepened her appreciation of the visual variety and psychological availability of domesticated animals and helped her to narrow her focus, primarily, to horse and bird imagery. "My current work is figurative and my media are oil on canvas, oil on board, and pencil, gouache and acrylic on paper," explains Hunt. "I enjoy looking at animals in life and in art – I use my own animals, animals I photograph locally, and in zoos and nature centers, as reference for my work – and I enjoy the challenge of translating their forms into paintings and drawings. Also, I appreciate that how we see, interpret, and represent these animals speaks to our human condition."
