For Richard Mazer, photography has been a sixty-year investigation of the potential inherent in black and white imaging. At first, like many photographers, he sought to represent and then enhance the beauty of the natural world. He traveled widely, and worked extensively in his adopted state of Vermont, in this quest. More recently he has brought a surreal flavor into his combination of image and caption. Mazer believes that the most intense experience in photography occurs "when the viewer realizes that his interaction with the image is on both conscious and unconscious levels. The effort of self-exploration this awareness can stimulate, both intellectually and emotionally, is the ultimate objective of this genre of fine-art photography." His work is found in private collections as well as those of the Fleming Museum in Burlington and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. This is his first solo exhibition of limited-edition carbon pigment prints.
