Clarence King lives on a farm just outside Cambridge, New York. Lately, after having divided his artistic attention between still life and landscape, King has taken almost exclusively to drawing his subjects from the fields, woodlots and hedgerows that surround his home. "I usually start these paintings on site," says King, "working in a fast, expressive manner. I finish them in the studio using a more deliberate, reflective approach." His primary focus is to emphasize the formal and emotional potential of each scene while investigating the evocative possibilities of the ever- changing seasons, the weather, and the geometries imposed on the terrain by generations of farming.
