GALLERY IV
"My first sighting of nature occurred when I was eight or nine years old and I really saw, for the very first time, a tree," says Harald Aksdal. "The need to draw it was strong," he says, "I can still see the deep patterns and textures of the bark and the seemingly endless crisscrossing of branches and twigs." At a considerable remove from that first sighting, and with his wife’s support and encouragement, Aksdal entered the art world full time at the age of 56. As can be seen, the influence of Aksdal’s first career as an architect is readily apparent in his art. Each piece begins with an on-location sketch and then, using reference photographs, is completed in studio. Through his detailed ink and watercolor landscapes, Aksdal attempts to demonstrate his love and deep respect for the rural and natural world, especially trees.
