Robin Nuse has been a practicing artist in northern Vermont and Hanover, New Hampshire, for more than thirty years. Raised in Bucks County, Nuse trained early in academic art by studying with her grandfather, Roy C. Nuse, a Pennsylvania Impressionist painter. She went on to major in photography at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work now blends a photographer’s keen observation of light and bold sense of composition with a painter’s impressionistic use of color. Lately Nuse has started producing pastels on a larger scale. She works in her studio from her own photographs of images that demand a larger format than her more traditional plein air pastels. The subjects chosen, although still realistic, are approached in a more abstract manner, and colors are exaggerated or pushed to a more emotional level. Employing many types of handmade pastels on sheets of handmade, sanded paper, Nuse layers the pastels to achieve the color balance she desires.
