The Color of Black - Black Artists and Friends
with Dr. Russ Housman

African-American (black) artists, their friends and the influences they had on each other and on the world of art is the theme of this slide lecture. Among the many artists presented will be: Jake Lawrence; Bob Gwathmey; Hale Woodruff; Larry Rivers; Jules Olitsky; Henry Tanner; Thomas Eakins and the Spiral. Many of the artists that will covered in this lecture were personal friends of Dr. Housman so sidebars and anecdotes will be sprinkled throughout the lecture.

Dr. Russ Housman has a Diploma of Fine Arts, the Bachelor, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. He is a Professor Emeritus, State University of New York at Garden City, NY. Additionally, he taught/administrated at Hofstra University, Adelphi University, and Milliken University. He also directed the art galleries of these universities and was the director of the City of Dectur Gallery and Art Center. His paintings are in numerous public, institutional and private collections. He while active in New York was represented and had solo shows at a number of New York City galleries.


Basket Weaving Workshops
Learn the art of basket weaving in these hands-on workshops and bring home a creation that is not only attractive but functional as well. The first workshop will introduce you to the Bread Basket, rectangle to oval shaped basket measuring 10” x 6” at the base. The walls are built with flat oval reed and the rim is completed with a crossing pattern to provide a decorative touch.

The second workshop will provide a little more challenge with the Medium Market Basket, which is built on a 6” x 10” handle with a base measuring 6” x 12”. The walls are constructed with flat reed using optional accent color and different width weavers for variety. Sign up for one or both workshops!

Joy Stewart has been weaving baskets for 15 years. She enjoys sharing the craft with others and maintains that basket weaving can be appreciated by people of all ages. She currently teaches upper school math at Maple Street School in Manchester, Vermont.
