These courses, based on "Spolin Theatre Games," create a
fun, easy, "no-right-or-wrong" atmosphere and help children
develop theatre skills, leading them to an understanding of what it
is to be a performer! More importantly, these courses enable children
to build confidence in themselves and reach higher levels of comfort
within group settings. Children play theatre games including exercises
in improvisation. They use props that they create themselves! They
will learn to tackle short scripts and perform for each other! Meanwhile
they explore, discover and develop their own unique imaginations.
Students become responsive to their peers, creating more knowledge
about themselves and those around them, finding it easier to project
themselves into a variety of situations. These courses go beyond the
theatrical to nurture attitudes that are useful in every aspect of
learning and life!
Cynthia earned her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre & Radio Broadcasting
from Susquehanna University (PA) and trained at The Neighborhood Playhouse
(NYC). She has coached, directed and served as a theatre outreach
coordinator for teens and college-age students for several years,
up and down the East Coast. During her 10 years in NYC (and currently
in VT), Cyndi teaches private sessions in monologue work, scene study,
song interpretation and audition technique, emphasizing confidence
building. She has performed and/or directed plays and musicals for
children with companies such as Theatreworks/USA (NYC), Penobscot
Theatre (ME), Dorset Theatre Festival (VT) and River Union Stage (NJ).

Nature and the Artist
July 11-14, Tuesday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
Come explore nature through the eyes of an artist! In this class,
we will experiment with different ways of blending art and the natural
world. Using what we see and discover outdoors as inspiration, we
will draw, paint, construct and create. We will develop observation
skills in nature journals, infuse our artwork in the studio with found,
natural materials, and build and photograph temporary creations outside
in the spirit of Andrew Goldsworthy. Looking at the work of prominent
artists, we will consider how they have explored natural themes in
their work and incorporate those ideas into our own art.
Minimum 6 students; maximum 12
$100 members/$125 non-members
A World of Art
August 1-4, Tuesday-Friday, 9:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.
There are as many styles of art as there are cultures in the world!
In this class, we will travel from continent to continent and focus
on the art of a different culture each day. Using the art we study
as inspiration, we will use two-dimensional and three-dimensional
media to create our own projects. Projects could be anything from
masks to scrolls to mosaics to cave paintings, with the goals of exploring
ways people have expressed themselves artistically throughout the
world and understanding how various art forms have played a role in
people’s lives. Come join us for this exciting, international,
artistic journey!

One of the Arts Center's priorities is to encourage art awareness and appreciation
for the community's children. To this end, the Arts Center has an active
Outreach Program that sponsors and supports art in schools and for children
throughout the year. Offering art classes for kids at the Arts Center is
another part of this effort. Most classes are held in the summer, but there
have been great winter workshops as well, such as snow sculpture, gingerbread
houses, and weekend drawing courses. Summer offerings have included, mime
and clowning workshops, mural painting, Clay Camp, puppet and mask making,
block printmaking and mixed media collage. Keep checking the web site (or
local newspapers) for upcoming classes. |
