The Artisans of Southern Vermont
GALLERY V & VI

The Artisans of Southern Vermont are a group of artists and craftspeople living in the southwest corner of Vermont who have joined together in order to draw attention to our region as an area populated with dedicated individual artisans.

Some are self-taught, some have learned from luminaries, some hold to traditional techniques, while others look for new ways of creating in their chosen medium. Through their expression and skill, they not only want to educate the public about the beauty of hand made objects, but also the beauty of their uniqueness in a world of mass-produced objects.

This show challenges the age-old division between Art and Craft, and demonstrates how both fine Art and fine Craft depend for their success on a combination of artistic imagination and hard-won mastery of specific techniques. This exhibition of juried entries by artists and artisans shows how each contributor is engaged in a dialogue with the history and tradition of their medium as well as with their own personal expression. Each exhibiter shares a concern with process, and a reverence for the expressive potential of high quality materials handled with great skill – in a word craftsmanship.
