Dave Herzfeld likes to paint farmscapes peopled with his friends and neighbors. Working directly from life, the largely self-taught Herzfeld creates plein air studies – quick paintings intended to capture the essence of a scene – which later serve as the foundation for his finished works. “To me there is an endless array of paintings to complete,” says Herzfeld, who sees each finished painting as a step along a path that will bring him, one day, to his own distinctive painting style. “That’s what motivates me, keeps me fresh and new, and distinguishes my work.”
