The Geometrical Likeness – Simplifying Portrait Painting with Chalice Mitchell – Virtual Workshop
Instructor: Chalice Mitchell
Saturday, May 22 & Sunday, May 23, 2021
10 a.m. – 4 p.m. (see session information below)
SVAC Member: $105; Non-Member: $130
Ages: 14 – Adult

In this four-session workshop, students will learn to paint recognizable portraits quickly and accurately. We will focus on proportion, form, contrast, and edges by breaking down the subject into basic shapes and then building gradually. Students will leave with the knowledge of how to analyze and simplify in order to paint a convincing likeness of the model. All levels of experience welcome! Chalice will teach in oils, but students are welcome to paint in acrylic if they prefer.

Sessions:
Saturday, May 22: 10 a.m – 12 p.m. and 2 – 4 p.m
Sunday, May 23: 10 a.m – 12 p.m. and 2 – 4 p.m

Materials List:

  • 11×14″ to 16×20″ canvas (primed & tinted)
  • paints; titanium white, yellow ochre, vermillion, alizarin crimson, ivory black (optional: ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, burnt umber)
  • mineral spirits (I like Gamsol)
  • painting medium (Linseed oil mixed with mineral spirits or Galkyd or Liquin)
  • 2 glass jars
  • a variety of brushes (flats, filberts, angles)
  • palette knife (useful but optional)
  • paper towels
  • palette (I use an old cookie sheet. I know it’s strange but it works! Glass or wood is more normal)
