Chalice Mitchell teaches the basics of portrait painting in this online workshop. We will learn how to work from good reference materials, simplifying the form of the head, using value to create form, understanding the simple anatomy of the face and head, depicting the individuality of the subject, and balancing cool and warm tones with a limited palette to learn to balance cool and warm colors.

This course includes a 45-60 minute demo video, available beginning on May 3, two individual (or small group) consultations with Chalice as you work through your painting, and a final show & tell with all the other students over Zoom on May 16 at 2:00 p.m. Learn to get convincing form and likeness in your portraits!

Materials List:

  • 11×14″ to 16×20″ canvas (primed & tinted) paints; titanium white, yellow ochre, vermillion, alizarin crimson, ivory black
  • mineral spirits (I like Gamsol)
  • Painting medium ( Linseed oil mixed with mineral spirits or Galkyd)
  • 2 glass jars
  • a variety of brushes (flats, filberts, angles)
  • palette knife (useful but optional)
  • paper towels
  • palette (I use an old cookie sheet. I know it’s strange but it works! Glass or wood is more normal)
