Southern Gothic: Beneath the Magnolia with The Johnson Collection brings together works that explore the American South as a place of beauty, contradiction, memory, and unease. Drawing on the mood and sensibility of Southern Gothic literature, the exhibition considers how artists translated the region’s histories and myths into images marked by romance, darkness, humor, and tension. Spanning the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, these works confront subjects ranging from rural life and social injustice to haunting landscapes and lingering stereotypes, revealing a South shaped as much by what lies beneath the surface as by what is seen clearly.
