Learn how to paint your favorite perennials in watercolor in this relaxing and fun two-day workshop. Draw and paint from direct observation of several blooming plant species, including different wildflowers and cut garden flowers. On the first day of the workshop, we will study techniques for painting a bouquet of flowers expressively with a strong composition and with an emphasis on developing values. The second day of the workshop will include training in drawing and painting more detailed aspects of individual flowers, such as their roots, stems, leaves, buds and blooms. Flowers will be provided. Students are also encouraged to bring their favorite cut flowers from their gardens to study and paint in class. A limited number of colors will be used to further understanding of utilizing warm and cool primary colors to mix for desired color results.

Suggested supplies:

• Cold press watercolor pad, 9×12 inches, any brand
• Hot press watercolor pad, any size, any brand
• Sketch pad for drawings and notes, any size or brand
• Light colored masking tape (not blue)
• Board or surface to tape watercolor paper onto
• Kneaded eraser
• HB and H pencils
• A minimum of the following seven professional quality tubes from Winsor & Newton, size 5 ml, of transparent watercolors which are best for botanical painting in each of the following warm and cool colors:
  • Winsor Lemon
  • Indian Yellow
  • Quinacridone Red
  • Permanent Rose
  • French Ultramarine
  • Winsor Blue Green Shade
  • Winsor Violet (Dioxazine)
• Palette to mix paints
• Synthetic Rounds Brushes, sizes #2, #4, #6, #10, plus a very small brush for details such as size 3/0 or other, Princeton SNAP! Corry Buckwalter is an art instructor, artist, and landscape designer based in North Adams, MA. She is committed to teaching observational drawing and painting techniques in a systematic and nurturing process. A painter in acrylic, oil and watercolor, Corry has shown and sold her paintings in juried exhibitions for more than 10 years while living in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
