This summer course will concentrate on individual creative expression in painting. Students will begin to develop a body of work in their own unique style. Projects will be student oriented, focusing on finding the technique, subject matter, and ideas of each individual in response to their interests, strengths, and experiences. The group will meet every two weeks to talk about painting, touching on the history, philosophy, technique. In between these sessions, students will schedule an hour meeting with Chalice (2 times) to discuss their project one-on-one. Chalice will offer individualized suggestions for further research, specialized demos on technique, and discussion on the process and ideas behind the work.

Chalice Mitchell paints to offer alternative representations of gender, sexuality, and power. Her paintings challenge gender-based stereotypes and destabilize limited (and limiting) gender divisions. She is interested in the spaces between, the grey areas, the intersections, the multifaceted quality of identity, social relations, history, and the messy nature of human experience. Born in Western Massachusetts, Chalice has lived and worked in the United States, Canada, Japan, and England. She has exhibited in Tokyo, London, New York City, Vancouver, Moscow, and many other places across the United States, England, Japan, Italy, and New Zealand. Chalice holds a BFA from Ringling School of Art and Design and an MFA from the University of South Florida.
