SVACrit – Group Art Critiques

SVACrit – Group Art Critiques will empower artists to speak publicly about their work as well as practice giving and receiving feedback in a supportive environment.

Wednesday, November 9
4 – 6 p.m.

Gallery 2, Yester House

SVACrit returns! Due to the overwhelming success of our inaugural art critique program in May, we are pleased to announce that Deborah Barlow will lead the next session in November, 2022. Barlow is a visual artist, writer, curator, and community advocate based in the Boston area. Her work in all its permutations supports artistic sovereignty, the limitless nature of creativity, and the innate intelligence of form. In recent years, she’s focused on engaging digital networks to bring artists and viewers closer together. Barlow founded Pell Lucy, an international collective of artists and has also created several successful Instagram-based programs that make art more accessible and affordable.

The purpose of critique is to support artists in the process of improving their work. You may be familiar with “group crits” as a signature aspect of attending art or design school. In these settings, artists present a small selection of their artwork to an audience, typically comprised of professors and students. The group then engages in a discussion of the artwork, exploring its potential significance as well as how effectively the work conveys its intended meaning.

Drawing from this model, Deborah Barlow will facilitate the critiques of 4-6 artists’ work. She will provide direct feedback herself as well as invite members of the audience to offer their observations and comments. Attendees will gain valuable experience in how to have deeper conversations about their own and others’ work.

Artists are welcome to attend as audience members only. Space is limited, so we encourage early registration. Click HERE to register as an audience member for the November 9 event. SVAC Member: $10; Non-member: $20
