Illustrating the classic writers of horror, Sci Fi and the supernatural!

Hauntings, creatures, aliens, magic spells, shape-shifters and generally all things that go bump in the night…. Love drawing that stuff? Join us! What makes black-and-white illustrations so perfect for horror? Each week we’ll analyze a shivery scene from one of the great works of chilling fiction, figure out what makes it tick and illustrate it. Authors include Edgar Allen Poe, Stephen King, Shirley Jackson, The Brothers Grimm, J.K. Rowling, Washington Irving, Tom Weir, Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, J.R.R Tolkien, H.P. Lovecraft and Julie Merwin herself!

What makes a great ghost story better? Pen and Ink! Practice techniques of shading, tone, line pressure and calligraphy with crow quill, brushes and modern Sharpie fine points. Analyze examples from great illustrations, listen to a short scene from one of the authors and put those techniques to work in your own art. Work on a different illustration each week. This class should appeal to the creative scribbler and reclusive teen-aged journal writer alike.

Bring your own favorite pen, but sketch book, ink, and other materials provided.

J. Carter Merwin is a professional illustrator and author of numerous children’s books including “The Legend of Now: Wingless” (available in the Southern Vermont Arts Center gift shop) and soon-to-be published “Hobb’s Lake Secret” and the adult fantasy series “The Tales of Earden.” www.jcartermerwin.com
