Incorporating Figures Into the Landscape: A One-Day Watercolor Workshop
Instructor: Ned Reade
September 28, 10am-3pm
SVAC Member: $90; Non-member: $110
Ages 16+

Many artists avoid adding figures into their landscape paintings because they can’t imagine how to do it. However, adding a figure or two can enliven a painting and even create a story!

Without delving into portrait painting, Ned will explain the basic proportions of the human figure. And then using a brush, he will demonstrate ways to capture a pose or gesture with just a few strokes.

Planning where to put figures before starting a scene is always the best, but Ned will show you how to add a figure into an already completed painting. Thoughtful design and composition will be discussed as well.

Suggested Materials
Bring your watercolor paints (as few as 6 to 8 different colors will suffice) brushes, a palette, watercolor paper- either in a block or taped to a firm board, a
container for water, and paper towels. Pencil and sketchpad. No easel needed. Participants are encouraged to bring watercolor paper to practice on and even a few finished paintings. (Ned uses the backs of old paintings he no longer cares about).

Whether painting on a ridge overlooking a sheep farm, or by the rushing waters of a trout stream, or along the New England coast, Ned Reade captures the changing light and colors of the seasons in watercolors and oils. He likes nothing better than filling a thermos of coffee and bringing a chocolate chip cookie to a painting location. He only rewards himself once the sketch is done, and he’s ready to paint! He teaches a watercolor workshop on Martha’s Vineyard each summer, and his work can be seen in galleries around New England. After 45 of teaching art at the Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, NY, he retired and opened a gallery in Pawling and splits his time between Arlington, VT and Pawling.
