We’re taking our learning experience online, using some of humanity’s newest technology to teach one of the oldest human crafts: hand spinning fiber into yarn.

In this class, students will learn how to create their own yarn using a hand spindle. The instructor will provide a spindle and wool (delivered safely to your door or shipped to you ahead of class), with additional instructional materials delivered to your email inbox in PDF form. We will spin together/apart during two group gatherings on Zoom, and students will receive individual instruction via video chat between our first and second group get-togethers. The primary focus of the class is teaching the fundamentals of hand spinning, an activity the New York Times recently described as “foundational.”*

At the end of the class, students will have a foundation upon which to keep building their skills, a spindle of their own, and fiber to continue their journey. No previous spinning or fiber experience necessary.

Class fee includes $24 for materials. Shipping costs, if necessary due to the student’s location or preference, will be paid by the student. Please contact Erin Kaufman at ekaufman@svac.org or 802-362-1405 with questions about shipping or any other aspect of the class.

* Dr. Bruce Hardy, Kenyon College, from “Early String Ties Us to Neanderthals”, New York Times, April 9, 2020.
“Fiber technology is a foundational technology for humans. Essentially, we wouldn’t really be here today, where we are in the world, without twisted fibers.”
