Susan Weiss works in the visual arts in various mediums including painting, photography, and graphics. After graduating from the University of Michigan, she moved to San Francisco and received an MA degree from Mills College and an MFA from San Francisco Art Institute.
Susan’s work explores issues of personal identity and the psycho-social landscape of contemporary culture. In 2011, she completed a two-year photographic project documenting military families during a deployment to Iraq/Afghanistan. The project, Service Unquestioned, was then produced in book form featuring her photographs and essays written by the family members. She has since documented, written and spoken about other projects as part of the series, Humanity in the Modern World. The series has included medical missions in Cambodia and Moldova, the refugee crisis in Lesbos and Berlin, and Vietnam veterans returning to Vietnam or humanitarian work.
