SVACrit – Group Art Critiques
Saturday, May 7, 2022
5 – 7 p.m.
Gallery 2, Yester House
SVAC Member: $10 / Non-member: $20

SVAC is launching a new program! SVACrit will empower artists to speak publicly about their work as well as practice giving and receiving feedback in a supportive environment.

The inaugural session will be led by Janet Loren Hill, a New York City-based artist, educator, and Co-Director of BOSSCRITT, a critique and curatorial community that offers support, collaboration, and opportunities to emerging artists. Hill received an MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and a BFA from the University of Washington. She has exhibited at numerous galleries nationally, including Field Projects Gallery (NY, NY), Blindfold Gallery (Seattle, WA) and Abigail Oglivy Gallery (Boston, MA), and has participated in multiple residencies internationally, including Vermont Studio Center, Wassaic Project, McColl Center for Art + Innovation, Beijing Royal School and The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (EFA) Studio Program.

The purpose of critique is to support artists in the process of improving their work. You may be familiar with “group crits” as a signature aspect of attending art or design school. In these settings, artists present a small selection of their artwork to an audience, typically comprised of professors and students. The group then engages in a discussion of the artwork, exploring its potential significance as well as how effectively the work conveys its intended meaning.

Drawing from this model, Janet will facilitate the critiques of 6 artists’ work. She will provide direct feedback herself as well as invite members of the audience to offer their observations and comments. Attendees will gain valuable experience in how to have deeper conversations about their own and others’ work.

Artists are welcome to attend as audience members only. Space is limited, so we encourage early registration. Click on “REGISTER” button to the left.

If you would like to apply to have your work critiqued, fill out THIS online application form. The deadline to apply is March 15.

  • To qualify, you must be an active artist member of SVAC.
  • You must also plan to submit at least one artwork to the spring member exhibition.
  • No prior experience participating in a group crit is required.
  • If accepted, you will be asked to provide Janet with additional information about the work you’d like critiqued as well as your goals for the experience.
  • Plan ahead—if accepted, you will be asked to bring 2-3 works of art to the critique.

Round out your evening at SVAC by making a dinner reservation after the program at curATE! Book through Open Table or call 802-362-9100.
