All levels welcome. Ages 16+

This simple, successful one-day workshop on drawing will walk you through many of the basics. It will make sense whether it’s a refresher for you or the first drawing class you have ever taken. Either way, it will help you to have a better understanding of drawing and to become more comfortable and confident in your drawing.

Developed originally in response to requests from painters, the course can also help to make your paintings better and help you learn to correct problem areas that might come up in your work.

Douglas will emphasize composition and general sketching to get shapes and proportions correct. He will address topics such as massing in large shapes; simple easy-to-understand perspective for landscape/seascape; understanding and tackling the task of drawing the various ellipses on vases, pitchers, bowls and plates for floral subjects and still-lifes; point-of-view; contour line; figure; how to build into a streetscape and get the scale correct; and the checklist of what to look for when trouble-shooting a painting or a drawing problem.

The entire class is done in your notebook/sketchbook. Douglas will offer lots of presentation, demos and workbook-type exercises. This one-day class works great on its own or as a preparation for the figure classes that follow. Check the Event Calendar for all of Douglas’s classes.

Lunch: Brown bag or run to café or deli close by.

Douglas David has painted his way across the country, capturing the beauty and spirit of the things he loves – tranquil country landscapes, sunrises and sunsets on his favorite beaches, a simple pitcher of spring lilacs or peonies, a lemon, lime or a slice of watermelon on a checked tablecloth. Paintings that reflect comfort, warmth meaning and simplicity: similar to everything important to him – his close knit family, life-long friendships, creatively fulfilling work and giving his best. A recipient of numerous regional and national awards and honors, Douglas’s teaching is a way of giving back and sharing some of his journey with those who choose to study with him.
